Little India & Rochor

Architectural works have almost completed at the 2 stations. Reinstatement to the surface at Little India has completed, and the temporary road deck above the canal has been demolished. The subsequent demolishment of the old canal is expected to be handled by the NSE contractor within the next 2 years.

Reinstatement is taking place at Rochor similarly, with the intersection between Rochor Canal Road and Bencoolen St realigned. The retrieval shaft at Queen Street has also been reinstated back. Photos in this update were taken from SSangyong's facebook page prior to June.

Little India progresses onward as the next station to complete reinstatement works on the surface. The permanent realignment of the southbound Bukit Timah Road was implemented earlier this morning. The temporary road decking above the old canal will be subsequently demolished alongside the former Rochor Canal.

Little India Clads

Cladding works have been on-going at the Little India station for several months of which the architectural finishing to the entrances, in addition to the ceiling of the concourse and platform levels, have completed. The site has also undergone some reinstatement works, with a portion of the Land Transport Authority office carpark reinstated beside the entrance. Casting is on going to cover up the TSA shaft and we can expect backfilling works from the next quarter.

This is a joint update with the C921 Ssangyong FB.

Rochor Realigns (2)

Another realignment of Rochor Canal Road took place this week. The Ophir-bound carraigeway has now been diverted over the completed cut and cover tunnels. This alignment is expected to hold until the completion of the future North-South Expressway.

The station is progressing well. In this night update we look at the cooling tower which has its front face cladded. The 2 entrances and ventilation building are still in the midst of its architectural finishing.

Downtown Line 2

As the Downtown Line 2 progresses closer to its completion, the public will begin to notice considerable amount of changes to the site landscape on the surface, with the introduction of aesthetics fittings and mechanical/electrical installations to the superstructures. A short consolidated update today tracks the progress of the DTL2 over the first few weeks of 2015, prior to the next quarterly-update which me and WK hope to commence right after CNY.

Rochor Realigns

Many new observations have been noted at C921 throughout the past month. The most notable difference is the straightening of the northbound Rochor Canal Road. The traffic diversion was smoothly facilitated at the start of the month. Works are now underway to demolish the former road and remove its road deck. M&E works are taking place along the main entrance and cooling tower. Across the road, the 2 lifts have been installed into Entrance B and with the completion of its structure, the site has been cleared allowing for the reopening of Perak Road.

To the south, Ophir Road has also been realigned over the newly-decked Rochor Canal near Sim Lim Tower. Further south, the Queen St retrieval shaft is in the midst of backfilling. Reinstatement works for Tekka Lane at Little India have begun as well.

Rochor receives a roof

Since our previous update in August, work has moved swiftly that another update is warranted. Most notably is that Entrance A next to Sim Lim Square has received the roof framework and will begin installation soon after.

Day 13, Rochor

One of the most complex projects ever to be undertaken in Singapore, Rochor has seen repeated stages of traffic diversions throughout its construction phase due to the relocation of the Rochor Canal.

A section of the North South Expressway will be stacked on the station's roof, and its tunnel will be built together with the Downtown Line. The station will have 2 entrances. Entrance B will feature 2 elevators on the southbound (SB) side of the road. On the opposite side of the road, the ventilation tower will be situated together with the main entrance A next to Sim Lim Square. An additional structure housing cooling towers for the station will also be located on this side of the road.

Day 12, Little India

Little India (LTI) is one of the 4 stations that have commenced structural works at the surface. In fact, it is presently leading progress for the entire DTL2 with both entrances achieving Basic Structural Completion (BSC). Entrance 1 is located outside the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Headquarters, providing a new entry point to the station, while entrance 2 is being integrated with entrance B, providing swift access to the concourses of both the North East Line (NEL) and Downtown Line without having to detour around the paid area.

Contract 921 of the Downtown Line also involves the construction of the permanent Rochor canal and A&A works to provide barrier free access at the existing entrance A and C of the NEL. To date, the canal roof has been successfully completed while piling and excavation has begun on the lift shafts.

February Tunnel Progress (2)

C917A
C917A
S602 has concluded soil improvement works however still stuck outside the Cascadia at over 200 rings. The soil is terribly soft and unstable in this sector hence the repetitive chemical grouting over the course of the last 2 months. Tunnelling works shall resume in about 10 days.

S603 at 687 rings (Feb 26, ~69% completed)
TBM has slowed down to around 2-3 rings a day due to granite. The granite formation shall persist for another 50m till it reaches the Bukit Timah First Diversion Canal. An April breakthrough still stands.

S604 at 629 rings (Feb 26, ~96% completed)
TBM made immense progress in the middle of March. There was a day it cast a whopping 8 rings during the day shift. Currently underpassing the existing CCL tunnels, breakthrough is scheduled within the first week of March.

S605 at 375 rings (Feb 2, ~56% completed)
Tunnelling has slowed down in this sector as well. An April breakthrough seems likely.

S608 Docks Once More

We have just received SMS that S608 has docked at the Queen St shaft after successfully completing the final Expo bound drive. This concludes about 9 months of tunnel works for C921. 4 Herrenknecht TBMs remain beneath the ground between KAP-SAV and TKK-BTN. The next breakthrough of S604 is anticipated to take place at BTN by the end of next month.

More photos to come soon.

Little India February

Little India station is one of those with the quickest pace of construction on Stage 2 along with Cashew station. The new exit near the North East Line (NEL) station is currently being integrated with the existing exit to provide a single combined entry-point for easy use by commuters. The roofs are being linked and other alterations being made so that the two entry-points will provide a one-stop solution for commuters heading to either the NEL or Downtown Line.

Stage 2 update January 2014

A month has passed since we entered into 2014 and this provides a good chance to look back at the progress over the stage 2 stations thus far. On the whole, the stations are progressing swiftly towards completion in 2016. It was reported in December that "Several stations have achieved basic structural completion for electrical and mechanical installation works to begin and this will be progressively achieved at all 12 stations by mid-2014". It is notable that most station structures are taking shape decently, with several showing signs of reaching the final levels where the entrances and exits pop up.
