Stage 2 update January 2014

A month has passed since we entered into 2014 and this provides a good chance to look back at the progress over the stage 2 stations thus far. On the whole, the stations are progressing swiftly towards completion in 2016. It was reported in December that "Several stations have achieved basic structural completion for electrical and mechanical installation works to begin and this will be progressively achieved at all 12 stations by mid-2014". It is notable that most station structures are taking shape decently, with several showing signs of reaching the final levels where the entrances and exits pop up.

DT01 - Bukit Panjang

Bukit Panjang station has achieved Basic Structure Completion this year. Several road diversions have taken place, allowing you to catch a glimpse of the transformation when taking the elevated LRT next to the station. Stubs of rebar can be seen on the station roof, presumably where the exits will sit once work on them commences full swing.

The link bridge to the LRT station has also taken shape, giving the station a bit more monstrous feel. Numerous additions have been built that virtually wrap around 3 sides of the station, to provide a covered walkway for unpaid transfers between the two systems (Downtown Line & Bukit Panjang LRT) in future. This link bridge will also link directly to the upcoming integrated shopping mall and bus interchange next door.

DT02 - Cashew

Cashew station is the one with the fastest progress along the entire stage 2. Escalators have been installed in the single entrance for the station, at the junction of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Cashew Road. The ventilation shafts are also taking shape, with one already fully built. There is a slight detailing going on with the surface of the concrete shaft, providing a small hint of design flair. Presumably, this station may be used for a ministerial visit in the future to update on the construction of Downtown Line 2 (DTL2) as well as announcing future lines (similar to Transport Minister's visit to Telok Ayer station on DTL1).

DT03 - Hillview

Hillview station has also progressed swiftly in recent months. Concrete pouring is on-going at the station site, which will also see the construction of a flyover on Upper Bukit Timah Road. The noise barriers at the station site have now been removed and this paves the way for further construction of the station where the ventilation shafts along the northbound carriageway can be constructed. A road diversion will also be necessary to facilitate the construction of the entrance along the southbound carriageway.

DT04 - Hume

In a previous post, we updated on the progress of the station shell at DT04, presumably to be named Hume station. The structure of the station box is relatively complete with the trackway ready for access by Alstom once they are able to progress this far from the Gali Batu Depot site. Interior works on the platform slab are on going.

DT05 - Beauty World

Beauty World station recently saw a road diversion take place where the original alignment of the junction at Upper Bukit Timah Road and Jalan Jurong Kechil was reinstated. This allows trackwork by Alstom to proceed as the station has been substantially completed. While Beauty World station was the first to begin construction (as it is the site for DTL2 ground breaking), the station still does not have any visible exit structures.

DT06 - King Albert Park

King Albert Park station was one of those affected by Alpine Bau Gmbh when the contractor went bust. Since then, it has been taken over by McConnel Dowell who have been busy pouring concrete and casting the various slab levels of the station.

DT07 - Sixth Avenue

Sixth Avenue, like KAP station, hit a set-back last year when its contractor declared bankruptcy. After being taken over by McConnel Dowell as well, the station has picked up once again. Through glimpses at the station pit, casting works have recommenced and several rooms have been cast at the base level.

DT08 - Tan Kah Kee

Tan Kah Kee is the third station affected by contractor Alpine Bau Gmbh's bankruptcy declaration but was subsequently taken over by contractor SK E&C. Works have resumed with tunneling progressing quickly as covered in the tunneling progress charts and updates. Work on the cut-and-cover cripple siding portion outside the Hwa Chong school is at the back-filling stage.

DT09 - Botanic Gardens

Botanic Gardens station has seen the commencement of Addition & Alteration works within the Circle Line station. These will facilitate the transformation of the empty box structure into a fitted out linkway for transfers between the Downtown Line and Circle Line. Back-filling has yet to begin but is expected to commence soon.

DT10 - Stevens

Stevens station saw its final breakthroughs take place last year. The station is still being fitted out structurally with tunnel rings being assembled within the abandoned TBM shield skins.

DT11 - Newton

Addition & Alteration works are underway to connect the Downtown Line station to the North-South Line. Hoarding can be seen at the linkway connecting the exits to the existing station. Escalator installation works are progressing and work on the exit has commenced as well. The station is mostly back-filled, with the exception of the launch shaft towards Stevens station. Hopefully, road realignment works can commence shortly once back-filling is completed.

DT12 - Little India

Work on back-filling the cut-and-cover portion used for the cripple siding is underway. Addition & Alteration works to fit out Exit C with a lift have also commenced, with part of the exit structure demolished to make way for the addition. Track works are also progressing from the launch shaft towards Newton.

DT13 - Rochor

The exit structure can be seen from Sim Lim Square taking shape, while the TBM inches the last few rings towards its final breakthrough at the Queen Street shaft.

Overall, works along Stage 2 are progressing smoothly. All stations are expected to obtain the basic structure completion by the middle of the year. Currently, Bukit Panjang, Cashew, Beauty World, Botanic Gardens, Newton and Little India are probably the stations that have passed this milestone. One can expect more exits to start popping up over the course of the year. Trackwork has commenced from Gali Batu depot and Little India temporary staging sites, with a third site at Beauty World due to join in soon, after which installation of the electrical components such as the platform screen doors can begin.
