DTL2e - A recap in August 2026

With the award of all 4 civil contracts for the Downtown Line 2 Extension (DTL2e), advanced works were progressing and works on the main contracts were commencing. Over at the sites of the two stations, clearing works as part of the advanced contract were still underway. Works under main contract 991 for the construction of connecting tunnels between DE1, DE2 and Gali Batu depot however were about to kick off proper.

It's hard to believe, as it only feels like yesterday that the line opened, but the Downtown Line (DTL) has been around for 13 years this December. 13 years on and the line is being extended at both ends, adding a further 6.2km to the 40km-long line. As one extension project reaches the finish line, another begins the arduous process. We check in at both projects to see how progress is going - details after the jump.

Contracts 990 & 992 - Next two DTL2e civil contracts awarded

Today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) successfully awarded 2 contracts for the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e). The two contracts will see the completion of two stations along the extension, one of which will serve as an interchange with the North-South Line (NSL).

Today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded the first of 4 civil contracts for the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) project - contract 991 for the construction of tunnels between the 2 stations and Gali Batu depot. The contract was awarded to a joint venture between Woh Hup & Urban Technology Engineering Construction, according to the LTA.

Xilin station. Contract T313. The section that delayed both the Downtown Line 3 extension and the Thomson-East Coast Line's phase 5 by a year. How are things looking at this overdue section? With approximately a year to go to opening day, we find out what progress has been made with this little laggard as the year's end bears down on us.

How much do you know about Xilin station's design? What we've come across thus far suggests a yellow livery for the station with a polka-dotted inspired design theme. Exit 1, which is integrated with a cooling tower on top of the exit, will feature the most of the design with the ventilation louvres for the cooling tower.

While contract tendering for the 4 civil contracts continues for the Downtown Line 2 Extension (DTL2e), work has commenced on advanced site preparation in the form of demolition works. Contract 9177, awarded to Woh Hup Engineering Pte Ltd, has seen the hoarding up of several factories within the Sungei Kadut project corridor. DTL2e - Final civil contract floated

Today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) floated the final civil contract tender for the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) - contract 993. This contract will see the construction of twin bored tunnels from the DE1 Intermediate station to the existing DTL main line tunnels. A docking shaft will be built as part of the contract near the junction of Senja Way and Woodlands Road.

Hume station was the thirteenth station along stage 2 of the Downtown Line that was planned along the Bukit Timah section. However, at the time of stage 2's construction in 2009, the authorities had deemed ridership to be insufficient to warrant full construction of the station. Instead, a shell structure was built with the basic outline of the station - a box with roughed in provisions for ticket machines, escalators, lifts and stairs. No architectural elements such as cladding, platform screen doors or completed floors were included in the initial build-out, performed under contract 915.

Subsequently, in 2019, the government decided that several years after the line opened that ridership suddenly had grown sufficiently to warrant the full station's opening. This was despite there not being any new residential developments coming up within the vicinity of the station, providing a puzzling but nonetheless welcome move. In January 2021, contract 915A for the fit out and completion of the station was awarded and works began at the station in February that year. The announcement of the Downtown Line 2 Extension (DTL2e) alignment was an eventful affair. In the lead up to the project getting off the ground, we take a closer look at the area where the two stations will be built before construction works begin for the project. More after the jump!

Earlier last month, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the locations of the two Downtown Line 2 Extension (DTL2e) stations. We look at the areas where the stations are to be located at before all the construction works commence and change the appearance of the sites.

Yesterday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) kicked off the process for tendering contracts under the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) project. Contract 991, the first DTL2e contract launched, will be for the "Design and Construction of Tunnels for Downtown Line 2 Extension and Associated Additions & Alterations Works to Gali Batu Depot".

DTL2e - Tidbits from the EIS

As part of the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) project, an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) report was generated under contract 9175 for the advanced engineering study to develop the extension. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has put up the EIS for public viewing and feedback from yesterday (6 Jan 2025) to 3 February 2025 on its website. You may view the reports and submit feedback here. So what exactly does the EIS cover? There are a few tidbits that can be gleaned from going through the report, which is rather detailed and technical in many aspects. But they always say that the devil is in the details, no?

The EIS covers multiple aspects that pertain to the impact of the project on the environment - be it to humans, flora or fauna. The reports cover different phases of the project as well, from pre-construction, to construction & operational phases. Specifically, the project looks at the impact in terms of emissions, impact to air & water quality, impact to flora & fauna within the proposed sites, any species of conservational importance (both plant & animal), impact from lighting, noise & vibrations and makes assessments of these impacts. Measures to combat the impacts are suggested and recommended. Phew, that was a lot to cover, but important nonetheless. For most of us, the more interesting bits lie in the project description. Downtown Line 2 extension announced

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced today an extension to the Downtown Line 2, adding two new stations to the line. The extension (DTL2e), will also see the addition of a new interchange station on the North-South Line (NSL), providing an additional transfer point between the existing lines. The station on NSL, with reserved station alphanumeric code NS6, will be the final station added along the Woodlands Extension.

Downtown Line 2 extension - Speculated alignment

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) first announced a series of network extensions and new stations on existing lines on May 2019. Thus far, we have seen the Cross Island Line 2 (CRL2) announced in September 2022, and NS3A Brickland Station announced in July 2023. We are expecting that LTA will be gearing up to announce another extension soon. The timing is ripe for an announcement of the extension, in view of recent contracts under the Downtown Line (DTL)'s contract number series being released for tender.

Greetings! We're glad to state that the Downtown Line (DTL) Construction blog is back! Since the completion of the line as first envisioned, several additions & extensions have been proposed, discussed and brought to life. Current projects in progress for the line consist of fitting out the DT4 station and extending the eastern end by 2.2km with 2 stations. We'll take a look at the progress made through October 2024 to commemorate the blog's comeback after 8 years!

Kaki Bukit Ave 1 was reinstated on 24th Apr 2016. Surface structures are at the final stage of completion.

Downtown Line 3 May/Jun 2016 Update: Part 1

Following the completion of DTL2 and the commencement of above ground works on the DTL3, we bring you a special update before DTL3 fully completes by 2017. Here is part 1 featuring DT20 to DT27, we will bring you DT28 to DT35 within the coming week.

Entrance and surface structures are almost completed, pending cladding and architectural finishes work. It looks like the ITS Centre entrance has been structurally designed to allow future developments above.
