30 July 2023 - AN aerial view of the existing North-South Line (NSL) cutting through Sungei Kadut Industrial estate. |
The announcement of the Downtown Line 2 Extension (DTL2e) alignment was an eventful affair. In the lead up to the project getting off the ground, we take a closer look at the area where the two stations will be built before construction works begin for the project. More after the jump!
With the line being extended to meet the North-South Line (NSL) at Sungei Kadut, space will be required for the new station to be constructed without adversely affecting operations of the existing line. Sungei Kadut station was originally planned to be built along with 5 other stations on the NSL Woodlands Extension, before ultimately being shelved for construction as a future in-fill station. At the time of the extension's construction in the early-1990's, the only provisions made were for the viaduct structures to be built using individual piers instead of common, shared piers.

The site to the east of the existing NSL viaduct is currently occupied by several industrial buildings, in various states of use. Some have been vacated, while others are still occupied. Ultimately, the days for these buildings are numbered. With the recent award of contract 9177 for the demolition of buildings, removal of piles and associated utility works, it may be a matter of time before work to raze the buildings commences.

The landscape within Sungei Kadut has gradually changed over time. When the Woodlands Extension first opened, the area housed many factories with rather archaic-looking machinery, piles of junk and lots of wood and timbre products. The estate has gradually seen the decline of these industries and the various plots of land within the estate freed up over time as the site transforms with the Jurong Town Corporation's vision for the area to become an agri-food hub in the north-west. The project will be a catalyst to further quicken the pace of change in the area once demolition works commence in earnest.
