The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced today an extension to the Downtown Line 2, adding two new stations to the line. The extension (DTL2e), will also see the addition of a new interchange station on the North-South Line (NSL), providing an additional transfer point between the existing lines. The station on NSL, with reserved station alphanumeric code NS6, will be the final station added along the Woodlands Extension.

DE2 / NS6 - Sungei Kadut / Sungei Kadut Central
Located along Sungei Kadut Central, an integrated transfer station will be built connecting the DTL and NSL. Plans for the station date back to the 1990's, when the Woodlands Extension to connect the NSL and Choa Chu Kang branch of the East-West Line were first mooted. In the Woodlands Extension's initial planning phases, 6 station were proposed (Yew Tee, Sungei Kadut, Marsiling, Woodlands, Admiralty & Sembawang), of which 1 station was later shifted to Kranji. This would be the fourth station to be constructed along an existing line, and the third such station to be added to the NSL after Canberra and Brickland stations.

The DTL station will be constructed on the eastern side of the existing NSL tracks, negating the need for the line to navigate through and cross under the existing foundations of the NSL viaduct, simplifying the construction process. Such planning will also negate the need to disrupt the alignment of Sungei Kadut Central given that land can be acquired for the construction of the station with the ending of leases and moving out of companies from factories in the area. Similar to the earlier DE1 station, the land around the station site is due to be redeveloped and can be better used with land use densification in future. Additionally, this presents an option for transit oriented development within the industrial estate to be built, further strengthening transport links and options within the district.

Both stations along the DTL2e are anticipated to be ready by 2035, with construction commencing around Q4 of this year. Between now and then, we can expect that tenders for the contract to construct the stations and tunnels will be released. Do stay tuned as we bring you some updates during the pre-construction phase.
