Downtown Line 2 extension - Speculated alignment

Rail enhancements announced as part of the Land Transport Master Plan for 2040.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) first announced a series of network extensions and new stations on existing lines on May 2019. Thus far, we have seen the Cross Island Line 2 (CRL2) announced in September 2022, and NS3A Brickland Station announced in July 2023. We are expecting that LTA will be gearing up to announce another extension soon. The timing is ripe for an announcement of the extension, in view of recent contracts under the Downtown Line (DTL)'s contract number series being released for tender.

  • Contract 9177 - Building demolition, pile removal, utility diversion & its associated works
  • Contract 91771 - Appointment of Qualified Person (Supervision) services for Contract 9177

The DTL is planned to be extended towards Sungei Kadut, with a new interchange station with the North South Line. This project is known as the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e). Sungei Kadut Station has been speculated for a long time, since LTA started reserving a station code between Kranji and Yew Tee Stations – N19 before the station code revamp, and NS6 now.

Alignment of DTL2e
DTL2 will be extended from Bukit Panjang towards Sungei Kadut by 4.3 km. Given the density of population centres along the route, we expect 2 new stations. This will be a balance between costs, technical feasibility, and offering new transport connectivity options. We find a third station along the alignment unlikely. Operations along the existing line may be affected. There will be minimal distance between the new mainline tracks, the existing depot reception tracks, and the next station..

For the purpose of this speculation exercise, based on educated guesses inferred from ground observations & developmental plans made publicly available, we are referring to the stations as DT1A and DT1B/NS6. Other station codes, such as DE1 and DE2, may be used.

It is expected that cut and cover works will be necessary to connect the new mainline tracks to the existing reception tracks towards Gali Batu Depot. The cut and cover work site is likely to be on the north of Senja Way, next to the former Bukit Panjang Temporary Bus Park. From here, the new mainline tunnels are expected to run along Woodlands Road until Stagmont Ring.

DT1A - Gali Batu / Yew Tee East / Woodlands Road

Speculated station location of DT1A station.

We expect that the next station will be located north of Stagmont Ring, at the existing Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) Yew Tee Industrial Estate, which currently has a very low occupancy rate. To better serve residents in Yew Tee and Yew Tee Primary School nearby, we expect that the station will be on the western edge of the existing industrial estate, with a new bridge across Pang Sua Canal. We are expecting that the tunnels will continue northwards parallel to Pang Sua Canal before turning west at Sungei Kadut Way. According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)'s master plan, the site is currently zoned as a reserve site, allowing future development potential above the station.

9 August 2023 - Notices indicate that the works are for an LTA project.

9 August 2023 - Soil investigation rigs just outside of the JTC Yew Tee Industrial Estate and
traces of a borehole within the compound.

Industrial Estate compound.

It is likely that an additional reception track will link the existing Gali Batu Depot to the mainline tunnels to allow deployment of trains directly to the new terminus station at Sungei Kadut. A cut and cover section may be constructed to accommodate cripple sidings for the link. From here, the mainline tunnels are likely to turn north again and run parallel to the NSL viaduct towards Sungei Kadut Interchange station.

DT1B/NS6 - Sungei Kadut
Sungei Kadut Station is likely to be located next to and below the existing Sungei Kadut Central, where space has been safeguarded to accommodate the elevated station for NSL. We expect that the NSL station will feature side platforms similar to Canberra and Dover, while connections to the DTL station will be through escalators to the basement level.
